Everybody knows that we are all born with different bodies, that we all have different amounts of strength, cardio fitness, flexibility, balance and motivation, yet for some reason many of us think that we should all be equally adept at the same kinds of exercise. Just as different clothing looks good on different people, so are we physically suited to different kinds of exercise. Rather than obeying what society thinks is right for you and going out for football when you would rather be involved with tennis, it’s important that you decide what kind of exercise is right for you so that you experience long term success.

The first way to determine what kind of exercise is right for you is to ask what kind of exercise you enjoy. This often depends on what kind of body you have, and what kind of body you want to have. Are you adept at cardio fitness or do you prefer strength based exercises? Do you like long, hard challenges or do you prefer short ones? What do you enjoy? Do you like team sports or going solo?

Another thing that determines what sort of exercise you can enjoy is your age. While everybody says that nothing should be off limits to anybody, it’s true that certain age groups are better and benefit more from certain kinds of exercise. For example, people in their fifties benefit greatly from exercises that train flexibility and balance such as yoga, while those in their twenties are excellent at those that require power and strength, explosive movement that is easy when you’re young.

In the end, you need to do what engages your interest and not what you think you should be doing. If you’re trying out for a team sport out of peer pressure than odds are you won’t like it, while if you’re swimming just to get a swimmer’s body odds are that you’ll get bored doing all those laps alone. So much of this boils down to common sense, but so few of us are allowed to exercise it when society, parents and friends want to tell us what to do.
